The Places We Love

Must visit churches near us, especially the first one!

Kent is full of lovely old village churches, but a few near us are genuinely special — whether for their setting, history or, in one case, some extraordinary stained glass.

These are four we think are particularly worth visiting.

All aboard! 3 vintage railway days out (and 2 we still need to try ourselves!)

We are rather spoilt for vintage railways in Kent. From a tiny railway hidden beside Tonbridge Castle to proper steam trains travelling across the Weald, and miniature locomotives running all the way across Romney Marsh, there are some genuinely lovely railway days out within reach of Woodlands.

Days by the beach

Broadstairs, Whitstable and Dungeness / Greatstone each offer a completely different sort of Kentish seaside day, all within reach of Woodlands Cottages. Here is how we choose between them.

Our Favourite Gardens

Kent is called the Garden of England, and around Yalding that feels entirely justified. We have grand historic estates, intensely personal gardens, rare plant collections and one or two places that still feel like a proper discovery.

A richly planted border at Great Dixter or Great Comp. Great Dixter is our favourite for planting inspiration, while Great Comp would give the guide a more local feel.
